Things to Never Say To Someone with Mental Illness

In this world and times, everyone is still struggling to destigmatize mental illness, prioritize mental health, and accept that our mental being is essential, too. It’s the reason many are still working to see the signs of depression and other mental illnesses among their family members, friends, acquaintances, and others. Despite many advocates and professionals spreading awareness about mental health and how to deal with it as the patient and close loved ones, many of us are still struggling with how to deal with and treat someone with mental illnesses.

Many behavioral health services providers may not change the world overnight, but our slow and steady work will be fruitful one day. One way to do it is by informing everyone what to say and not say to someone with mental illness. So, here are two things to never speak to them.

  • “It’s all part of God’s plan.”

Though we want to soothe their feelings and let them feel that it’s not their fault, the individual may have different spiritual beliefs. And if you say this, they can react poorly, pushing them away from spiritual peace.

  • “Things could be worse,” then proceed to compare them.

Many medical care in Maryland see people in different states of well-being, and it may seem that others have it worse than others. But each of us has a different threshold of worse, and no one should ever have the guilt and shame of experiencing less than others just because society created it.

Here at Kargman Center For Community Care & Mental Wellness, Inc., we believe each of us matters. Thus, we help those who need help to find mental health peace.
